Uproot and Run

It’s been a few years since I stopped blogging and I’ve missed it the entire time. Last week I told my friend Zach that I missed it desperately. That night, while trying to fall asleep, all I could think of were things to blog about. I stayed up until 1 am writing down the ideas that felt exciting, and the next day I told my fiancé, Morgan, that I was going to start blogging again. It felt like a strangely big moment!

Please enjoy my debut (re-debut? debut part two?) post, which is about spending the evening beach combing with friends at my mom’s house.

Mostly we collected bits of quartz and algae-dyed rocks that were interestingly or satisfyingly shaped. My friend Rachel and I were searching for pieces of sea glass, but everything we found was still too sharp. It was a shame because we found a lot of beautiful pieces of green glass, and one that was transparent and blue together. For future success we plan on researching local beaches that are good for that sort of thing.

Low tide afforded a lot of opportunities for rock skipping! I am absolutely terrible at it, but Morgan and Zach did good. It gave me a chance to take a bunch of action shots.

One of the first interesting things that happened was Rachel noticing a ton of dead crabs. They were tiny things, and they lined the length of the shore. Some sort of mass dying event had apparently occurred and they all washed in with high tide. When the tide went out, the shells remained. It was super strange.

I kept my eyes out for any beach trash that I could collect, but I’m happy to report that I only found one tiny pink zip tie! Although, since I’ve been reading The Dainty Squid’s blog for the past seven years, I’ve been inspired to eventually go around collecting, organizing and photographing, then disposing of beach trash. It seems like a fun thing to do that is obviously also helpful for the beaches. I should probably get some supplies though. Gloves, at the very least. And of course a collection bag ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You can find some sweet shells and algae rocks for yourself by going to the Silverdale Waterfront Park in Kitsap County. The waterfront has bathrooms and showers, a dock, picnic tables, and a playground. It’s a good place to spend a sunny day.

Alright, this was fun! It feels good to be writing and editing again. I plan on sharing many more outings around the county because I’d like to be a tourist in my own town. There are so many places around the world I want to travel to, but time off and income create natural limitations. May as well thoroughly acquaint myself with my surroundings and become some sort of Kitsap County expert.
